Jason and the Argonauts
The story is a set a generation before the time of the Trojan War, around 1300 BC, but the first known written mention of it comes six centuries later, in the age of Homer (800 BC). The tale came out of the region of Thessaly, in Greece, where early epic poetry developed. The Greeks have retold and reinterpreted it many times since, changing it as their knowledge of the physical world increased. At the centre of The Argonauts is the love story between Maggie Nelson and the artist Harry Dodge, who is fluidly gendered. As Nelson undergoes the transformations of pregnancy, she explores the challenges and complexities of mothering and queer family making.

There isn’t sufficient space to relate more than the barest bones of the saga. Indeed, under certain conditions, I think so myself, but then I Argonauts was its Marat, its Danton, its Robespierre, its Mirabeau and its Bonaparte. Certainly, there’d never been a time or a situation – or a musical entity – like it. Tiphys, son of Hagnias, left the Siphaean people of the Thespians, well skilled to foretell the rising wave on the broad sea, and well skilled to infer from sun and star the stormy winds and the time for sailing.

In parenthesis, what became The Eurythmics supported us at some college function in the Midlands. Yea, and two other sons of Poseidon came; one Erginus, who left the citadel of glorious Miletus, the other proud Ancaeus, who left Parthenia, the seat of Imbrasion Hera; both boasted their skill in seacraft and in war. Moreover from Arcadia came Amphidamas and Cepheus, who inhabited Tegea and the allotment of Apheidas, two sons of Aldus; and Ancaeus followed them as the third, whom his father Lycurgus sent, the brother older than both.

Merging his own experiences of disability with the narratives of other disabled communities, he has created thought-provoking artworks aiming to draw attention to the frustrating and exhausting societal barriers which people with disabilities face on a daily basis. Nor do we learn that Heracles of the mighty heart disregarded the eager summons of Aeson’s son. Now from Euboea came Canthus eager for the quest, whom Canethus son of Abas sent; but he was not destined to return to Cerinthus.

His story has come full circle – as in all Greek myths, the hero’s destiny is in the hands of the gods. For the ancient Etruscans a gold coloured fleece was a prophecy of future prosperity for the clan. Recent discoveries about the Hittite Empire in Bronze Age Anatolia show celebrations where fleeces were hung to renew royal power. This can offer insight into Jason’s search for the fleece and Aietes’ reluctance to relinquish it. At the age of 20 Jason set off to return to Iolkos – on his journey losing a sandal in the river while helping Hera, Queen of the Gods, who was in disguise as an old woman. On arriving before King Pelias, Jason revealed who he was and made a claim to the kingdom.
He was not in truth the son of Abas, but Leto’s son himself begat him to be numbered among the illustrious Aeolids; and himself taught him the art of prophecy–to pay heed to birds and to observe the signs of the burning sacrifice. From Argos came Talaus and Areius, sons of Bias, and mighty Leodocus, all of whom Pero daughter of Neleus bare; on her account the Aeolid Melampus endured sore affliction in the steading of Iphiclus. Jason was accompanied by some of the principal heroes of ancient Greece.
